About Hydra
Hydra is an island in the Saronic Gulf, located approximately 40 miles southwest of Athens. The crescent-shaped island covers 19 square miles and has a permanent population of around 2,000 residents. Hydra Town, the only settlement and port, is built amphitheatrically around a natural harbor, featuring distinctive grey stone mansions, white houses with red-tiled roofs, and narrow cobblestone streets.
The island's unique characteristic is the prohibition of motor vehicles, except for sanitation and construction vehicles. Transportation is by foot, donkey, or water taxi. This ban, in place since the 1950s, preserves the island's traditional character and tranquility. The absence of cars, combined with well-preserved 18th and 19th-century architecture, contributes to Hydra's distinctive atmosphere.
Hydra played a significant role in the Greek War of Independence (1821-1829), with the island's powerful merchant fleet converting to warships. Notable maritime families built grand archontika (captain's mansions), many of which now house museums. The Historical Archives Museum of Hydra documents this naval history. The mansions of the Koundouriotis and Tombazi families are particularly notable. The Monastery of Profitis Ilias and the Convent of Agios Efpraxios are located in the hills above the town.
Since the 1960s, Hydra has attracted artists, writers, and celebrities, becoming an international bohemian destination. The island's combination of historical significance, architectural preservation, and car-free environment makes it one of Greece's most exclusive destinations. Tourism is the primary economic activity. The island has limited beaches, mostly consisting of rocky swimming spots, with the most popular being Vlychos, Kamini, and Mandraki. The Hydra School of Fine Arts continues the island's artistic tradition.
