About Andros

Andros is the northernmost island of the Cyclades, located southeast of Evia. The island covers 147 square miles, making it the second-largest in the Cyclades after Naxos, with a population of approximately 9,000 residents. Andros Town (Chora) serves as the capital, situated on the east coast and featuring a unique architectural style distinct from typical Cycladic architecture, with neoclassical mansions and narrow paved streets.

Gavrio on the west coast functions as the main port, connecting the island to Rafina and other Cycladic islands. Other significant settlements include Batsi, a popular tourist resort, and the inland village of Menites, known for its springs. The island has a strong maritime tradition, with many wealthy shipping families originating from Andros.

Andros is notable for its abundant water supply, unusual for Cycladic islands, resulting in lush vegetation, running streams, and waterfalls. Cultural attractions include the Museum of Contemporary Art, founded by the Goulandris family, and the Archaeological Museum in Chora. The island features numerous hiking trails, including paths leading to the Monastery of Panachrantos, founded in the 10th century. The Tower of Agios Petros, a Hellenistic tower dating to the 4th century BCE, stands near Gavrio. Andros maintains a more upscale and quieter tourism profile compared to islands like Mykonos or Santorini.
