About Amorgos
Amorgos is the easternmost island of the Cyclades, located in the southern Aegean Sea. The elongated island stretches 20 miles in length with an area of 49 square miles and a population of approximately 2,000 residents. The island has two ports: Katapola on the west coast and Aegiali in the north.
Chora, the island's capital, is a traditional Cycladic settlement built amphitheatrically on a hillside, featuring whitewashed houses, windmills, and numerous churches. The island's most famous landmark is the Monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa, an 11th-century monastery dramatically built into a cliff face 300 meters above the sea on the east coast. The monastery houses a miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary brought from Palestine.
Amorgos gained international attention after serving as the filming location for Luc Besson's movie "The Big Blue" (1988). The island maintains a quieter, more traditional atmosphere compared to more developed Cycladic islands, attracting visitors interested in hiking, particularly along ancient paths connecting villages.
