About Ammouliani
Ammouliani is the only inhabited island in the Chalkidiki peninsula of northern Greece, located in the Singitic Gulf near Mount Athos. The island measures approximately 1.8 square miles and has a population of around 600 permanent residents. The main settlement, also called Ammouliani, contains the island's port, shops, and most tourist facilities.
The island remained property of the Vatopedi Monastery of Mount Athos until 1925, when it was given to Greek refugees from Asia Minor following the population exchange between Greece and Turkey. Ammouliani is accessible by a short 15-minute ferry ride from the village of Tripiti on the mainland.
The island is known for its sandy beaches, particularly Alykes Beach on the southwest coast. Several small uninhabited islets, called Drenia, lie off the southeastern coast and are popular for day trips. Ammouliani's economy relies primarily on fishing and summer tourism, with most visitors coming from northern Greece and the Balkans.
