About Aegina
Aegina is an island in the Saronic Gulf, located approximately 17 miles southwest of Athens. The island has an area of 34 square miles and a population of around 13,000 residents. Aegina Town serves as the capital and main port, featuring neoclassical buildings along its waterfront.
The island is renowned for the Temple of Aphaia, a well-preserved Doric temple dating to approximately 500 BCE, which forms part of the "sacred triangle" with the Parthenon and the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion. Other significant sites include the medieval ghost town of Paleochora, which contains numerous Byzantine churches, and the Monastery of Saint Nektarios, one of the largest Orthodox churches in the Balkans. The town of Souvala on the northern coast serves as a secondary port.
