About Skiathos Town
Skiathos is the main town and port of Skiathos island in the Northern Sporades archipelago. The town has a population of approximately 5,000 permanent residents and is situated on the southeastern coast of the island. Skiathos is built amphitheatrically around the natural harbor, with traditional architecture characterized by red-tiled roofs and white-washed walls.
The town is divided into two main districts by the small boat harbor. The old town features narrow cobblestone streets climbing the hillside with traditional houses, while the newer district extends along the waterfront. The Bourtzi, a small peninsula separating the two harbors, was formerly a fortress and now contains a cultural center and open-air theater. A stone causeway connects it to the main waterfront.
The House of Alexandros Papadiamantis, now a museum, was the home of Greece's most important prose writer of the 19th century, who was born on Skiathos in 1851. The small house displays personal belongings, manuscripts, and period furnishings. Skiathos played a role in the Greek War of Independence, and the first Greek flag was reportedly designed and raised on the island in 1807. The pine-covered hilltop above town contains the ruins of a medieval castle, Kastro, which served as the island's capital from the 14th to the 19th centuries to protect inhabitants from pirate raids. The fortified settlement contained approximately 300 houses and 22 churches. The island became famous internationally as a filming location for the 1978 movie "Mamma Mia!" Skiathos Airport, one of the most dramatic approaches in Europe, is located near the town.
