About Parikia
Parikia (also known as Paros Town or Chora) is the capital and main port of Paros, a major island in the Cyclades archipelago. The town has a permanent population of approximately 4,500 and serves as the primary entry point to the island, with ferry connections to other islands and mainland Greece.
The Church of Panagia Ekatontapiliani (Church of Our Lady of One Hundred Doors) is one of the most important and oldest Byzantine churches in Greece. According to tradition, Saint Helena, mother of Constantine the Great, founded the church in the 4th century CE, though the current structure dates primarily to the 6th century with later additions. The complex includes a baptistery with an unusual sunken cruciform font and features marble columns and intricate stone carving. Legend claims the church has 99 visible doors and windows, with the 100th to be revealed when Constantinople returns to Greek control.
The Frankish Castle, built in 1260 CE, incorporates marble from ancient temples, with sections of ancient columns and architectural elements visible in its walls. Parts of the castle still stand in the old town area. The Archaeological Museum of Paros displays significant finds from throughout the island, including a fragment of the Parian Chronicle, a marble inscription recording Greek history from mythological times to 264 BCE, which provided crucial chronological information for ancient Greek history.
The old town features typical Cycladic architecture with whitewashed buildings, blue-painted details, and narrow winding streets. The windmill near the harbor entrance has become a landmark of the town. Ancient Paros was famous for its high-quality white marble, which was used for many classical Greek sculptures including the Venus de Milo. The harbor waterfront contains numerous restaurants, cafes, and shops.
