About Mykonos Town
Mykonos (also called Chora) is the main town and capital of Mykonos island in the Cyclades archipelago. The town has a permanent population of approximately 10,000, which swells considerably during the summer tourist season. Mykonos is renowned for its distinctive Cycladic architecture, vibrant nightlife, and cosmopolitan atmosphere.
The town features brilliant white cubic houses with blue-painted doors, windows, and balconies, narrow winding streets designed to confuse pirates in earlier centuries, and numerous small chapels scattered throughout. The most iconic landmark is Little Venice, a picturesque row of 18th-century houses built directly on the waterfront with balconies overhanging the sea. The Mykonos Windmills, a row of seven iconic white windmills on a hill overlooking the town, date to the 16th century and were used to mill wheat. Five traditional windmills are also located in the Little Venice area.
The Church of Panagia Paraportiani, located in the Kastro neighborhood, is one of Greece's most photographed churches. The whitewashed structure is actually a complex of five small churches built between the 15th and 17th centuries, creating an unusual asymmetrical design. The Archaeological Museum of Mykonos displays pottery and sculptures from the neighboring island of Delos, including finds from a purification pit. The Folklore Museum occupies an 18th-century sea captain's house and displays traditional furnishings, tools, and exhibits on local life. Mykonos serves as the primary departure point for boats to Delos, one of Greece's most important archaeological sites.
