About Kavala

Kavala is a coastal city in northern Greece, capital of the Kavala regional unit. Built amphitheatrically on the slopes of Mount Symvolo, the city has a population of approximately 55,000. Kavala developed on the site of ancient Neapolis, the port where Saint Paul first set foot in Europe in 49 CE.

The Kavala Castle, a Byzantine fortress substantially rebuilt by the Ottomans in the early 16th century, dominates the old town (Panagia quarter). The Kamares, a well-preserved stone aqueduct built by Suleiman the Magnificent in 1530, supplied water to the old town from mountain springs. The structure features multiple arches spanning up to 25 meters in height.

The Imaret, built in 1817 by Muhammad Ali Pasha, is one of the finest examples of Islamic architecture in Greece. The large complex served as a religious school and poorhouse. The House of Mehmet Ali, birthplace of the founder of modern Egypt's royal dynasty, is preserved as a museum. The Archaeological Museum of Kavala displays finds from the region, including items from ancient Amphipolis. The Tobacco Museum documents the city's significant role in tobacco processing and trade during the 19th and 20th centuries. The modern port serves as an important transportation hub for connections to the northern Aegean islands.
