About Kalamata
Kalamata is the capital and chief port of Messinia in the southwestern Peloponnese. With a population of approximately 73,000, it is the second-largest city in the Peloponnese after Patras. The city is internationally known for its namesake Kalamata olives, a major export product.
The Castle of Kalamata, built by the Franks in the 13th century on the site of an ancient acropolis, overlooks the city from a hillside position. The Venetians and Ottomans subsequently modified the fortifications. The Church of the Holy Apostles, a Byzantine structure built in the 13th century, is located near the castle and features important frescoes.
The Archaeological Museum of Messenia displays finds from throughout the region, including artifacts from the Bronze Age palace at Pylos. The city suffered extensive damage during the 1986 earthquake, which destroyed much of the historic center. The rebuilt waterfront features a long promenade and beach. The Benakeion Archaeological Museum contains local antiquities and folk art. The Municipal Railway Park preserves historic railway equipment and documents the former Kalamata-Messini-Pylos railway line. The city hosts the annual Kalamata International Dance Festival, one of Greece's premier contemporary dance events.
