About Ioannina
Ioannina is the capital and largest city of the Epirus region in northwestern Greece, situated on the western shore of Lake Pamvotis. The city has a population of approximately 114,000 and is built at an elevation of 470 meters above sea level.
The old town, or Kastro, is surrounded by well-preserved Ottoman fortifications dating to the early 19th century when the city served as the capital of Ali Pasha's domain. The Its Kale (Inner Citadel) within the castle contains the Fethiye Mosque, now housing the Municipal Ethnographic Museum. The site where Ali Pasha was assassinated in 1822 is preserved within the fortress.
Lake Pamvotis contains a small island, simply called Island of Ioannina, accessible by boat from the city. The island features several monasteries, including the Monastery of Philanthropinoi with 16th-century frescoes. The Archaeological Museum of Ioannina displays artifacts from Epirus, while the Silversmithing Museum showcases the traditional craft for which the city was historically renowned.
