About Corfu City
Corfu (Greek: Kerkyra) is the capital of the island of Corfu and of the Ionian Islands region. The town has a population of approximately 40,000 and features architecture reflecting centuries of Venetian, French, and British rule. The historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Old Fortress, built by the Venetians on an artificial islet in the 16th century, separates the old town from the sea. The New Fortress, completed in 1589, overlooks the northern part of town. Between them lies the Spianada Square, one of the largest squares in Greece, featuring the Liston, an arcaded building modeled after the Rue de Rivoli in Paris, constructed during the French administration.
The Palace of St. Michael and St. George, built during British rule in 1819, now houses the Museum of Asian Art, one of Europe's most significant collections of Asian artifacts. The Church of Saint Spyridon, built in the 1580s, contains the relics of Saint Spyridon, the island's patron saint. The church's distinctive red-domed campanile is a landmark of the town. The narrow streets of the old town feature Venetian-style buildings with enclosed balconies.
