About Chios Town
Chios is the capital of the island of Chios, located in the northern Aegean Sea near the coast of Turkey. The town has a population of approximately 30,000 and serves as the island's main port and administrative center.
The town developed during the Byzantine period and flourished under Genoese rule in the 14th and 15th centuries. The Genoese Castle, built in the 10th century and expanded in the 14th century, dominates the old quarter with its massive walls and towers. Inside the fortress walls, the old Turkish quarter features narrow streets and historic houses.
The Archaeological Museum of Chios displays finds from throughout the island, including Neolithic artifacts and items from the ancient city-states. The Byzantine Museum, housed in the restored Medjidieh Mosque, contains religious icons and frescoes. The town suffered significant destruction during the Chios Massacre of 1822, when Ottoman forces killed thousands of Greek inhabitants during the Greek War of Independence, an event that shocked Europe and inspired artists including Eugène Delacroix. The island is historically famous for producing mastic, a resin harvested from mastic trees found only in southern Chios.
