About Athens Metro
The Athens Metro is the rapid transit system serving Athens, Greece, and its metropolitan area. The network consists of three lines covering approximately 85 kilometers with 61 stations. The system is operated by STASY (Statheres Syigkoinonies), a subsidiary of the Athens Urban Transport Organisation.
Line 1 (Green Line) is the oldest, originally opened in 1869 as a steam railway and electrified in 1904. It runs from Piraeus to Kifissia, serving 24 stations over 25.6 kilometers. Lines 2 (Red Line) and 3 (Blue Line) opened in 2000 as part of infrastructure improvements for the 2004 Summer Olympics. Line 2 extends from Anthoupoli to Elliniko, while Line 3 runs from Nikaia to the Athens International Airport.
Construction of the modern metro lines uncovered significant archaeological artifacts, with over 50,000 objects discovered during excavation. Several stations feature museum displays of ancient findings, including Syntagma and Acropolis stations, which showcase artifacts dating back to ancient Greek and Roman periods.
The network serves approximately 1.4 million passengers daily. All stations are air-conditioned and equipped with accessibility features for disabled passengers. The airport line connects the city center to Athens International Airport in approximately 40 minutes.
Extensions are currently under development, including Line 4, which is planned to run from Galatsi to Goudi, and various extensions to existing lines. Line 3 was extended to Piraeus in 2020, improving connectivity to the port area.
