About Argostoli
Argostoli is the capital and largest town of Kefalonia, the largest of the Ionian Islands in western Greece. The town serves as the administrative, commercial, and transportation hub of the island, with a population of approximately 12,000 residents.
The town was rebuilt following the devastating 1953 earthquake that destroyed most of the original neoclassical architecture. Modern Argostoli features wide streets and earthquake-resistant buildings. The waterfront promenade along the harbor is lined with cafes, restaurants, and shops.
Notable landmarks include the De Bosset Bridge, a stone bridge built in 1813 that crosses the bay, and the Koutavos Lagoon, a protected wetland area home to the endangered loggerhead sea turtle. The Focas-Cosmetatos Foundation houses a collection of ecclesiastical artifacts and historical items. The Archaeological Museum of Argostoli displays finds from the Mycenaean period through the Roman era. The town serves as a gateway to nearby attractions including Myrtos Beach and Melissani Cave.
