About Wolfsburg

Wolfsburg is a city in Lower Saxony, Germany, with approximately 130,000 inhabitants, located on the Aller River. Unlike most German cities, Wolfsburg has no medieval history, being founded in 1938 as a purpose-built city to house workers for the Volkswagen factory. The city's development has been entirely intertwined with the Volkswagen corporation, making it one of Germany's wealthiest cities per capita due to tax revenues from the automotive giant.

The Volkswagen Factory, one of the world's largest automobile manufacturing complexes, produces thousands of vehicles daily and offers tours showing production processes. The Autostadt (Car City), a Volkswagen-owned automotive theme park and museum complex, displays vehicles from all Volkswagen Group brands, features pavilions with interactive exhibits, and serves as a delivery center where customers collect new cars. The Phaeno Science Center, designed by Zaha Hadid and opened in 2005, showcases futuristic architecture with interactive science exhibitions.

The Wolfsburg Castle, a Renaissance structure dating from the 13th century, gave the city its name and houses a museum and cultural center. The Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg exhibits modern and contemporary art in a prominent building.

The city's economy depends overwhelmingly on Volkswagen and supplier companies. The university campus of TU Clausthal offers engineering programs. Wolfsburg maintains extensive parks and cultural facilities despite its industrial character. The city exemplifies 20th-century planned industrial urbanism. The football club VfL Wolfsburg, also Volkswagen-supported, plays in the Bundesliga.
