About Wiesbaden

Wiesbaden is the capital of Hesse, Germany, with approximately 289,000 inhabitants, located on the Rhine River opposite Mainz. Known as a spa town since Roman times, the city developed into a fashionable resort during the 19th century, attracting European nobility and wealthy visitors to its hot springs. Wiesbaden possesses numerous Belle Époque and neoclassical buildings reflecting this elegant past. The city serves as the seat of the Hessian state government.

The Kurhaus (Spa House), built in 1907, exemplifies neoclassical architecture with its columned facade and houses a casino, event halls, and restaurants. The adjacent Kurpark provides landscaped gardens and a pond. The Marktkirche (Market Church), built in brick Gothic Revival style with five towers, dominates the Schlossplatz. The Hessian State Theatre, an ornate building from 1894, hosts opera, ballet, and drama performances.

The Museum Wiesbaden houses significant natural history and art collections, particularly expressionist paintings. The Neroberg, a hill offering panoramic city views, can be reached by funicular railway operating since 1888. The Russian Chapel on Neroberg, with gold onion domes, was built for a Russian duchess. The Wilhelmstrasse, the main shopping street, features upscale boutiques and historic buildings.

Wiesbaden remains an active spa town with 26 hot springs. The Kaiser Friedrich Therme offers traditional bathing in Roman-Irish style baths. The city's 15 thermal springs produce over two million liters daily of mineral-rich water. The economy benefits from state government administration, congress tourism, insurance companies, and wine production, as Wiesbaden lies in the Rheingau wine region. The Sektkellerei Henkell, a major sparkling wine producer, has facilities here. The city maintains elegant character with tree-lined avenues, parks, and Belle Époque architecture attracting visitors to spa facilities and cultural events.
