About Ulm

Ulm is a city in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, located on the Danube River with approximately 130,000 inhabitants. The city marks the boundary between Swabia and Bavaria, with its twin city Neu-Ulm located across the Danube in Bavaria. Ulm was a Free Imperial City during the Middle Ages and an important trading center. Albert Einstein was born in Ulm in 1879, though his family moved to Munich when he was an infant.

The Ulm Minster (Ulmer Münster) possesses the world's tallest church tower at 161.5 meters, built entirely of brick. The Gothic church, begun in 1377 and completed in 1890, offers views from the tower's observation platform after climbing 768 steps. The Fishermen's Quarter (Fischerviertel) preserves medieval half-timbered houses along narrow streets and canals, creating a picturesque historic district. The Leaning House, tilting at an angle greater than the Tower of Pisa, operates as a hotel.

The Ulm Museum displays art and archaeology, including the world's oldest known figurative artwork, the Lion Man carved around 40,000 years ago. The Danube Swabian Museum documents the history of German settlers in Southeast Europe.

Ulm University, founded in 1967, specializes in medicine and natural sciences. The city's economy includes electronics, pharmaceuticals, and automotive suppliers. Ulm's location on the Danube has historically facilitated trade. The city successfully combines medieval heritage with modern research and industry. The annual Schwörmontag festival celebrates local civic traditions.
