About Trier

Trier is a city in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, with approximately 114,000 inhabitants, located on the Moselle River near Luxembourg. Founded by Romans around 16 BC as Augusta Treverorum, Trier claims to be Germany's oldest city. The extensive Roman monuments are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, making Trier the largest collection of Roman architecture north of the Alps.

The Porta Nigra (Black Gate), built around 170 AD, is the best-preserved Roman city gate north of the Alps and Trier's most famous landmark. The massive sandstone structure still dominates the cityscape. The Imperial Baths (Kaiserthermen), Barbara Baths, and Amphitheater demonstrate Roman engineering and urban planning. The Roman Bridge (Römerbrücke) remains in use after nearly 2,000 years.

The Trier Cathedral (Trierer Dom), built partly with Roman bricks, is Germany's oldest bishop's church, founded around 320 AD. It houses the Holy Robe, believed to be Christ's tunic. The Liebfrauenkirche (Church of Our Lady), adjacent to the cathedral, is one of Germany's earliest Gothic churches. The Electoral Palace (Kurfürstliches Palais) displays rococo architecture with beautiful gardens.

Karl Marx was born in Trier in 1818, with his birthplace now operating as a museum. Trier University, founded in 1473 and re-established in 1970, serves the region. The city's economy includes wine production (Moselle wine region), tourism, and services. The extensive Roman heritage and wine culture attract visitors worldwide. The pedestrianized old town preserves medieval streets alongside Roman monuments.
