About Siegen

Siegen is a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, with approximately 103,000 inhabitants, located in the Siegerland region at the confluence of several rivers including the Sieg. The city developed around medieval iron ore mining and metalworking industries. Siegen is the birthplace of baroque painter Peter Paul Rubens (1577), honored throughout the city with monuments and museums.

The Upper Castle (Oberes Schloss), built on a hilltop, houses the Siegerlandmuseum with regional history collections and hosts the annual Rubens Prize. The Lower Castle (Unteres Schloss), located in the city center, contains the Rubens Gallery with paintings by the artist and his school. The St. Nikolai Church features an unusual hexagonal golden crown atop its tower, the Krönchen, which has become Siegen's symbol.

The Rubens House, the artist's presumed birthplace, operates as a memorial site. The Museum for Contemporary Art displays 20th and 21st-century works. The surrounding hills offer hiking trails and viewpoints over the city and valleys.

The University of Siegen, founded in 1972, serves over 18,000 students with programs emphasizing engineering, natural sciences, and social sciences. The city's economy includes machinery manufacturing, particularly specialized equipment, automotive suppliers, and media industries. The historic mining and metalworking industries have transformed into modern manufacturing. Siegen's hilly topography creates a distinctive urban landscape with buildings spread across multiple elevations. The city maintains cultural traditions while supporting contemporary arts and education.
