About Schwerin
Schwerin is the capital of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany, with approximately 98,000 inhabitants, making it Germany's smallest state capital. Located among numerous lakes, the city is known as the "City of Seven Lakes." Schwerin served as the residence of the Dukes and Grand Dukes of Mecklenburg-Schwerin from 1358 to 1918, giving it a rich architectural heritage.
The Schwerin Castle (Schweriner Schloss), situated on an island in Lake Schwerin, is one of Germany's most important Romantic historicist buildings. The castle's distinctive golden domes, towers, and elaborate architecture create a fairy-tale appearance. Built primarily in the 19th century incorporating older structures, it now houses the state parliament and a museum. The Castle Garden features baroque and English landscape designs with sculptures and water features.
The Schwerin Cathedral (Schweriner Dom), dating from 1248, features brick Gothic architecture with a 117-meter tower offering city views. The State Museum Schwerin possesses important art collections, particularly Dutch and Flemish Old Masters and 18th-century French paintings. The Old Garden (Alter Garten), the main square, is bordered by the neoclassical State Theatre and State Museum.
The Market Square features the neo-Gothic Town Hall and historic buildings. The Mecklenburgisches Staatstheater offers opera, theater, and orchestral performances. Lake Schwerin and surrounding lakes provide sailing, swimming, and waterfront promenades.
The state government employs many residents, making public administration central to the economy. Tourism increasingly contributes economically, attracted by castles, lakes, and nature. Schwerin combines small-city charm with capital status, offering cultural institutions typically found in larger cities. The lakeside setting creates exceptional quality of life and scenic beauty, distinguishing Schwerin as one of Germany's most picturesque capitals.
