About Rostock

Rostock is a city in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany, located on the Baltic Sea coast with approximately 205,000 inhabitants, making it the largest city in the state. Founded around 1200, Rostock was one of the most powerful members of the Hanseatic League and remains Germany's largest Baltic Sea port. The city combines maritime traditions with university culture and seaside tourism.

The St. Mary's Church (Marienkirche), built between 1290 and 1470, exemplifies brick Gothic architecture with a massive tower and houses an astronomical clock from 1472 that still functions. The Kröpeliner Straße, a pedestrianized street lined with gabled houses, forms the main shopping area connecting to the historic New Market (Neuer Markt) with its Town Hall featuring a baroque facade added to the original Gothic building.

The Warnemünde district, located where the Warnow River meets the Baltic Sea, serves as Rostock's seaside resort and cruise ship port with a wide sandy beach, lighthouse, and harbor promenade. The Abbey of the Holy Cross (Kloster zum Heiligen Kreuz), founded in 1270, now houses the city's cultural history museum. The City Wall preserves several gates including the Kröpeliner Tor and Steintor.

The University of Rostock, founded in 1419, is one of the oldest universities in the Baltic Sea region and Northern Europe. The city's economy centers on the port, handling cargo and ferry connections to Scandinavia, shipbuilding, maritime services, and wind energy technology. The Neptun shipyard continues Rostock's centuries-long shipbuilding tradition.

The Rostock Zoo, one of Germany's largest, features the "Darwineum," an innovative exhibit about evolution. The annual Hanse Sail attracts tall ships and sailing vessels from around the world. Despite heavy World War II damage, Rostock reconstructed significant historic buildings. The city balances maritime industry, tourism, and university culture. The Baltic Sea location provides recreational opportunities and influences the climate and economy.
