About Reutlingen
Reutlingen is a city in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, with approximately 119,000 inhabitants, located at the foot of the Swabian Alps. The city developed as a Free Imperial City during the Middle Ages and became an important center for textile manufacturing. Reutlingen possesses the Spreuerhofstraße, officially the world's narrowest street at its tightest point measuring just 31 centimeters wide.
The St. Mary's Church (Marienkirche), a Gothic church from the 13th century, dominates the city center but lost its tower in a 1726 lightning strike, leaving an unusual truncated appearance. The Tübinger Tor (Tübingen Gate), dating from the 13th century, remains as one of the preserved medieval city gates. The Half-Timbered Houses in the old town showcase traditional Swabian architecture, though much was destroyed in a major fire in 1726 and World War II bombing.
The Museum Reutlingen displays local history and contemporary art. The nearby Achalm Tower on the Achalm mountain offers panoramic views of the city and Swabian Alps. The ruins of Achalm Castle provide hiking destinations.
Reutlingen University, founded in 1855, emphasizes business, engineering, and design. The city's economy includes machinery manufacturing, textile production, automotive suppliers, and logistics. The outlet shopping center Outletcity Metzingen nearby attracts shoppers. Reutlingen maintains strong economic ties within the Baden-Württemberg region. The surrounding Swabian Alps offer recreational opportunities including hiking and nature exploration. The annual Christmas market and traditional Swabian culture define local character.
