About Regensburg
Regensburg is a city in Bavaria, Germany, located at the northernmost point of the Danube River with approximately 151,000 inhabitants. Founded by Romans as Castra Regina in 179 AD, it possesses one of Germany's best-preserved medieval old towns, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006. Regensburg was the seat of the Perpetual Imperial Diet from 1663 to 1806, making it the political center of the Holy Roman Empire during this period.
The Regensburg Cathedral (Regensburger Dom St. Peter), built between the 13th and 16th centuries, exemplifies Gothic architecture with twin spires and magnificent stained glass windows. The Stone Bridge (Steinerne Brücke), completed in 1146, was for centuries the only crossing of the Danube between Ulm and Vienna. The Old Town Hall (Altes Rathaus) contains the Imperial Diet Museum showing where the assembly met.
The Porta Praetoria, a Roman gate from 179 AD, remains as a rare example of Roman architecture in Germany. The Walhalla Memorial, located on a hill above the Danube, honors notable German-speaking figures in a Greek temple structure. The Historic Sausage Kitchen (Historische Wurstküche), operating since the 12th century, claims to be the world's oldest continuously operating restaurant.
The University of Regensburg, founded in 1962, serves over 20,000 students. The city's economy includes automotive industries (BMW engine plant), electronics, and biotechnology. Pope Benedict XVI taught theology at the university before becoming pope. Regensburg's well-preserved medieval architecture attracts substantial tourism.
