About Paderborn

Paderborn is a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, with approximately 156,000 inhabitants, located where the Pader River emerges from over 200 springs, making it Germany's shortest river at just 4 kilometers long. The city was founded in 777 when Charlemagne built a palace here, becoming an important religious and political center in medieval times. The name derives from the Pader springs (Pader-born meaning "born of the Pader").

The Paderborn Cathedral (Paderborner Dom) features Romanesque and Gothic architecture with distinctive Westwerk and houses the relics of Saint Liborius, the city's patron saint. The Three Hares Window in the cathedral cloister displays a famous medieval motif. The Imperial Palace (Kaiserpfalz), reconstructed on the foundations of Charlemagne's palace, serves as a museum about the city's Carolingian history.

The Pader Springs create a unique urban landscape with water features throughout the city center. The Adam and Eve House, an elaborate Renaissance townhouse from 1560, exemplifies Weser Renaissance architecture. The Computer Museum at Heinz Nixdorf MuseumsForum is the world's largest computer museum, documenting 5,000 years of information technology history.

Paderborn University, founded in 1972, emphasizes computer science and engineering. The city's economy includes electronics manufacturing, mechanical engineering, and food processing. Paderborn hosts the annual Liborifest, one of Germany's largest folk festivals. The city successfully combines medieval heritage with modern technology industries. SC Paderborn plays in German professional football leagues.
