About Osnabrück

Osnabrück is a city in Lower Saxony, Germany, with approximately 166,000 inhabitants, located on the Hase River. Founded by Charlemagne in 780, the city played a significant role in European history as one of two locations where the Peace of Westphalia was negotiated between 1643 and 1648, ending the Thirty Years' War. The city motto "Peace City" reflects this historical significance.

The Peace Hall (Friedenssaal) in the Historic Town Hall preserves the chamber where peace negotiations took place, now a museum displaying portraits of diplomats and peace treaty documents. The Osnabrück Cathedral (St. Peter's Cathedral), founded by Charlemagne, features Romanesque and Gothic elements. The St. Marien Church exemplifies Gothic architecture with impressive stained glass windows.

The Felix Nussbaum House, designed by Daniel Libeskind, commemorates the Jewish painter murdered in Auschwitz and displays his works in an emotionally powerful architectural setting. The Market Square features the distinctive Town Hall with stepped gables and the Marktkirche. The Museum and Park Kalkriese, located outside the city, marks the presumed site of the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in 9 AD where Germanic tribes defeated Roman legions.

Osnabrück University, founded in 1974, serves over 13,000 students. The city's economy includes automotive suppliers, paper manufacturing, and metal processing. The author Erich Maria Remarque, known for "All Quiet on the Western Front," was born here, with a peace center bearing his name. The city maintains strong cultural offerings and hosts annual peace conferences.
