About Oberhausen

Oberhausen is a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, located in the western Ruhr area with approximately 214,000 inhabitants. The city developed primarily during the 19th century as an industrial center for coal mining, iron, and steel production. Following the decline of heavy industry, Oberhausen successfully transformed into a shopping and entertainment destination.

The CentrO, opened in 1996 on the site of a former steel mill, is one of Europe's largest shopping and leisure centers, attracting millions of visitors annually to its stores, restaurants, and entertainment facilities. The Gasometer Oberhausen, a massive former gas storage facility from 1929, now serves as an exhibition hall with changing large-scale art installations and a viewing platform offering panoramic views. The Sea Life Oberhausen aquarium features diverse marine life exhibits.

The LVR Industrial Museum at the former Gutehoffnungshütte ironworks documents the region's industrial heritage. The Olga Park and Kaisergarten provide green spaces for recreation. The König-Pilsener-Arena hosts concerts, sporting events, and shows.

Oberhausen's economy focuses on retail, logistics, and service industries, moving away from its industrial past. The city's transformation from steel production to entertainment and shopping exemplifies Ruhr region restructuring. The Rhine-Herne Canal facilitates inland shipping. The city maintains connections throughout the Ruhr area with excellent transportation links. The annual Short Film Festival attracts international filmmakers.
