About Munich
Munich, the capital and most populous city of Bavaria in southern Germany, serves as the country's third-largest city with a population of approximately 1.5 million residents within the city proper and approximately 6 million in the greater metropolitan area. Located on the River Isar in the Bavarian plateau, Munich lies about 165 kilometers north of the Austrian border and covers an area of 310.71 square kilometers.
The city's origins trace back to 1158 when Henry the Lion, Duke of Saxony and Bavaria, founded a settlement near a Benedictine monastery. Munich's name derives from the Old High German term "Munichen," meaning "by the monks." Throughout the medieval period, Munich grew as an important salt trading center and became the residence of the Bavarian dukes in 1255.
Munich's economy ranks among Germany's strongest, with major corporations including BMW, Siemens, and Allianz maintaining headquarters in the city. The technology sector, particularly software development and biotechnology, has experienced significant growth. Tourism contributes substantially to the local economy, with over 17 million visitors annually.
The city houses numerous world-renowned attractions. Marienplatz, the central square, features the famous Glockenspiel in the New Town Hall tower. The Frauenkirche, Munich's cathedral with its distinctive twin towers topped by green onion domes, dominates the skyline. Neuschwanstein Castle, though located outside the city, remains closely associated with Munich tourism.
Munich's cultural landscape includes prestigious institutions such as the Bavarian State Opera, the Munich Philharmonic, and numerous world-class museums. The Deutsches Museum, one of the world's largest science and technology museums, attracts millions of visitors. The Pinakothek museums house extensive art collections spanning from classical antiquity to contemporary works.
Oktoberfest, the world's largest beer festival, takes place annually in Munich from late September to early October, drawing over six million visitors from around the globe. The festival occurs on the Theresienwiese, a large open space in the city center.
Munich hosted the 1972 Summer Olympics, which were overshadowed by the Munich massacre terrorist attack. The city successfully bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympics but later withdrew its application. Munich's public transportation system includes an extensive network of U-Bahn (subway), S-Bahn (suburban rail), trams, and buses operated by MVG (Münchner Verkehrsgesellschaft).
