About Magdeburg

Magdeburg is the capital of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, located on the Elbe River with approximately 244,000 inhabitants. Founded by Charlemagne in 805, it was one of the most important medieval cities in Central Europe and served as the seat of an archbishopric. Otto I, the first Holy Roman Emperor, is buried in the city's cathedral. Magdeburg suffered near-total destruction in 1631 during the Thirty Years' War and again in World War II.

The Magdeburg Cathedral (Magdeburger Dom), begun in 1209, is Germany's oldest Gothic cathedral and houses the tomb of Emperor Otto I. The cathedral's impressive twin towers rise 104 meters. The Green Citadel (Grüne Zitadelle), designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser and completed in 2005, features the artist's distinctive colorful, organic architectural style with irregular shapes and rooftop gardens. The Millennium Tower, built for a 1999 exhibition, offers panoramic city views.

The Kunstmuseum Kloster Unser Lieben Frauen occupies an 11th-century Romanesque monastery building and displays contemporary art and sculpture. The city's historic marketplace features a copy of the famous Magdeburg Rider statue, the original from around 1240 being preserved indoors.

Otto von Guericke University, named after the 17th-century scientist who invented the vacuum pump in Magdeburg, emphasizes engineering and medicine. The city's economy includes machinery manufacturing, renewable energy technology, and logistics. Magdeburg serves as an important inland port on the Elbe. The Herrenkrug Park offers extensive green space and leisure facilities.
