About Lemgo

Lemgo is a town in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, located in the Lippe region with approximately 40,000 inhabitants. The town is renowned for its exceptionally well-preserved old town featuring over 300 half-timbered houses from various centuries. As a former Hanseatic city, Lemgo prospered during the Middle Ages and Renaissance through trade and craftsmanship, particularly in linen production.

The Old Town Hall (Altes Rathaus), built in stages from 1325 to 1612, displays a unique combination of Gothic and Weser Renaissance architectural elements with eight distinctive gables and elaborate stone carvings. The St. Nicolai Church, dating from the 13th century, contains a remarkable astronomical clock and impressive organ. The Hexenbürgermeisterhaus (Witch Mayor's House), a beautiful Renaissance townhouse from 1571, now operates as a museum documenting the town's witch trial history during the 17th century.

The Junkerhaus, an extraordinary half-timbered house transformed by artist Karl Junker between 1889 and 1912 into an artistic gesamtkunstwerk with intricate wood carvings covering every surface, is unique in Germany. The Weser Renaissance Museum showcases furniture, art, and artifacts from this distinctive regional architectural style.

Lemgo hosts the Technical University of Ostwestfalen-Lippe, founded in 1971, emphasizing engineering and production technology. The town's economy includes machinery manufacturing, food processing, and furniture production. The medieval character and architectural heritage make Lemgo a popular destination for cultural tourism. The Christmas market in the historic old town attracts many visitors.
