About Krefeld

Krefeld is a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, with approximately 225,000 inhabitants, located on the west bank of the Rhine River. The city developed as a major center for silk and velvet production during the 18th and 19th centuries, earning it the nickname "Samt- und Seidenstadt" (Velvet and Silk City). Mennonite and other religious refugees significantly contributed to the city's textile industry development.

The Krefeld Zoo houses diverse animal species with a focus on naturalistic enclosures and conservation. The Linn Castle, a medieval moated castle in the Linn district, contains a museum displaying local archaeology and folk art. The surrounding Linn Historical District preserves medieval architecture with restored town walls and gates. The Kaiser Wilhelm Museum features art collections spanning from medieval to contemporary periods.

The Haus Lange and Haus Esters, modernist villas designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in the 1920s, now operate as contemporary art museums. These buildings are considered significant examples of early modern residential architecture. The Botanical Garden offers diverse plant collections and greenhouses.

The textile industry, while declined from its historic peak, remains part of Krefeld's economy alongside chemical production, mechanical engineering, and logistics. The city's proximity to Düsseldorf creates strong economic connections. Several parks, including the Stadtwald, provide green spaces. Krefeld maintains cultural institutions including theaters and museums. The city's industrial heritage and modernist architecture attract architecture enthusiasts.
