About Koblenz
Koblenz is a city in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, located at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers with approximately 113,000 inhabitants. With over 2,000 years of history, dating to Roman foundation as Confluentes, it is one of Germany's oldest cities. The strategic location at the junction of two major rivers has historically made Koblenz militarily and commercially important.
The Deutsches Eck (German Corner), a promontory where the Moselle flows into the Rhine, features a massive equestrian statue of Emperor Wilhelm I and offers views of both rivers and the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress. The fortress, one of Europe's largest preserved fortifications, sits on a hill 118 meters above the Rhine and houses museums and restaurants accessible by cable car. The Electoral Palace (Kurfürstliches Schloss), an elegant neoclassical building along the Rhine promenade, formerly housed the archbishops who ruled the region.
The Old Town preserves medieval streets, churches, and squares, though much was reconstructed after World War II damage. The Stolzenfels Castle, a romantic Gothic Revival palace upstream from Koblenz, overlooks the Rhine Valley. The city lies within the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site, a spectacular river landscape with vineyards, castles, and historic towns.
Koblenz serves as a regional administrative and commercial center. Wine production and tourism are economically significant. The University of Koblenz-Landau maintains a campus here. The city's position on Rhine river cruises and proximity to the Moselle wine region attracts many visitors.
