About Kassel

Kassel is a city in Hesse, Germany, located on the Fulda River with approximately 197,000 inhabitants. The city served as the capital of the Kingdom of Westphalia under Napoleon's brother Jérôme and later as the capital of the Electorate of Hesse. Kassel is internationally known for documenta, the world's most important exhibition of contemporary art, held every five years since 1955.

The Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2013, is Europe's largest hillside park. The Hercules monument (Herkules), built between 1701 and 1717, crowns the hilltop and overlooks the city. Water cascades descend from the Hercules through the park to a fountain in front of Wilhelmshöhe Palace, which houses an Old Masters painting gallery with works by Rembrandt and Rubens.

The Brothers Grimm Museum documents the life and work of Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, who lived and worked in Kassel for decades collecting fairy tales. The Orangerie in Karlsaue Park hosts temporary exhibitions and features baroque architecture.

The University of Kassel, founded in 1971, emphasizes ecological and environmental disciplines. Kassel's economy includes mechanical engineering, especially rail vehicle manufacturing, and renewable energy technologies. The city was heavily bombed during World War II, resulting in significant modern reconstruction. The documenta exhibitions transform the city into a global art center, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors. The German Fairy Tale Route begins in Kassel, connecting sites associated with the Brothers Grimm.
