About Heilbronn

Heilbronn is a city in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, located on the Neckar River with approximately 132,000 inhabitants. Known as "Käthchenstadt" after Heinrich von Kleist's drama "Das Käthchen von Heilbronn," the city is an important center for wine production in the Württemberg wine region. Heilbronn's history dates back to the 8th century, and it developed as a significant trading center during the Middle Ages.

The St. Kilian's Church (Kilianskirche) features a distinctive Renaissance tower from 1529 and serves as the city's landmark. The tower's astronomical clock dates from 1580. The Deutschhof, a former Teutonic Order castle, now houses the city museum and archives. The Experimenta, Germany's largest science center, opened in 2019 in a striking modern building on the Neckar waterfront, offering interactive science and technology exhibitions.

Heilbronn was heavily damaged during World War II, with approximately 60% of the city destroyed in an air raid in 1944. Post-war reconstruction created a modern city center. The city is headquarters to several major companies, including Lidl, the discount supermarket chain, and Kaufland. The wine industry remains economically significant, with extensive vineyards in surrounding hills.

The Technical University of Heilbronn, founded in 1961, specializes in engineering, business, and computer science. The Neckar River facilitates inland shipping. The city hosts the annual Heilbronn Wine Festival. The Bundesgartenschau (Federal Garden Show) in 2019 transformed the waterfront areas into extensive parklands.
