About Heidelberg
Heidelberg is a city in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, located on the Neckar River with approximately 156,000 inhabitants. Internationally renowned for its romantic old town, baroque architecture, and historic university, Heidelberg attracts millions of tourists annually. The city has inspired numerous poets, artists, and musicians, particularly during the Romantic era.
The Heidelberg Castle (Heidelberger Schloss), a red sandstone ruin overlooking the city, exemplifies Renaissance architecture and remains one of Germany's most visited tourist attractions. The castle houses the world's largest wine barrel, the Heidelberg Tun, capable of holding 220,000 liters. The Old Bridge (Alte Brücke or Karl-Theodor-Bridge), built in 1788, features baroque bridge gates and connects the old town with the opposite riverbank.
Heidelberg University, founded in 1386, is Germany's oldest university and one of Europe's most prestigious research institutions. The University Library contains the famous Codex Manesse manuscript collection. The Philosophenweg (Philosophers' Walk), a scenic path on the hillside opposite the castle, offers spectacular views of the old town and castle.
The city's economy benefits significantly from tourism, the university, and biotechnology companies. The old town features baroque buildings along the Hauptstraße, one of Europe's longest pedestrian streets. Heidelberg was largely spared from World War II bombing, preserving its historic architecture.
