About Gelsenkirchen

Gelsenkirchen is a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, located in the central Ruhr area with approximately 268,000 inhabitants. The city developed rapidly during the 19th century as coal mining expanded, becoming one of the most important mining centers in the Ruhr region. Following the decline of coal and steel industries, Gelsenkirchen faced significant economic restructuring.

The Veltins-Arena, home stadium of FC Schalke 04 football club, is one of Europe's most modern stadiums with a retractable roof and pitch. The stadium, which seats over 62,000 spectators, hosts Bundesliga matches, concerts, and other major events. The Zoom Erlebniswelt (Zoom Experience World), a modern zoo designed around geographic themes, features immersive habitats representing Alaska, Africa, and Asia without visible barriers.

The Nordsternpark occupies the site of a former coal mine, transformed into a recreational area with an illuminated mining tower serving as a landmark. The Science Park houses technology companies and research facilities. The Musical Theater has established Gelsenkirchen as a musical theater destination.

The city's economy has shifted toward services, logistics, and solar technology, with several solar energy companies based here. Gelsenkirchen faces ongoing challenges related to post-industrial transformation but invests in education and innovation. The strong football culture, centered on Schalke 04, remains an important part of local identity. The city maintains connections throughout the Ruhr area via extensive rail and road networks.
