About Erlangen
Erlangen is a city in Bavaria, Germany, with approximately 116,000 inhabitants, located north of Nuremberg. Founded by Huguenot refugees in the late 17th century after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, the city features distinctive baroque planned streets in its new town section. This planned expansion created a unique urban layout with geometric precision.
The Erlangen Palace (Erlanger Schloss), originally built in the 18th century, now houses the administration of Friedrich-Alexander-University. The palace's baroque gardens, the Schlossgarten, provide a large public park in the city center. The Huguenot Church commemorates the French Protestant refugees who significantly influenced the city's development.
Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nürnberg, founded in 1743, is one of Bavaria's largest universities with strengths in engineering, medicine, and natural sciences. Erlangen is a major center for medical technology and telecommunications, with Siemens maintaining substantial operations and research facilities here. The company's healthcare division headquarters employs thousands of workers.
The annual Erlangen Bergkirchweih, a beer festival held in late spring, attracts over one million visitors to celebrate in beer gardens under chestnut trees. The city successfully combines university culture with high-tech industry, creating a dynamic environment. The Erlangen Arcade and pedestrian zone offer extensive shopping.
