About Dresden

Dresden is the capital of Saxony, Germany, with approximately 565,000 inhabitants, making it Germany's twelfth-largest city. Located on the Elbe River, it earned the nickname "Florence on the Elbe" for its baroque architecture and artistic treasures. Dresden served as the royal capital of the Electorate and Kingdom of Saxony, reaching its cultural peak in the 18th century under Augustus the Strong.

The Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) dominates Dresden's skyline with its distinctive stone dome. Originally built from 1726 to 1743, it was destroyed in the 1945 Allied bombing and remained ruins until its reconstruction was completed in 2005. The Zwinger Palace, a baroque masterpiece built between 1710 and 1728, houses several museums including the Old Masters Picture Gallery with Raphael's "Sistine Madonna." The Dresden Castle (Residenzschloss) served as the royal residence and contains the Green Vault (Grünes Gewölbe), one of Europe's most spectacular treasure chambers.

The Semperoper, Dresden's opera house designed by Gottfried Semper, is one of the world's most beautiful opera houses and home to the Saxon State Orchestra, one of the oldest orchestras in the world. The Brühl's Terrace, a promenade along the Elbe River, is known as the "Balcony of Europe." The Dresden Cathedral (Katholische Hofkirche), built in the 18th century, features baroque architecture and houses the crypt of Saxon kings.

The Albertinum museum displays 19th and 20th-century art, while the Panometer presents 360-degree panoramic exhibitions. The Großer Garten, a large baroque garden, contains the Dresden Zoo and botanical gardens. The Blue Wonder (Blaues Wunder), a steel bridge from 1893, exemplifies 19th-century engineering.

Dresden Technical University is one of Germany's leading universities with strong engineering programs. The city has developed as a major center for microelectronics and is often called "Silicon Saxony," with numerous semiconductor and technology companies. Tourism plays a vital economic role, with millions visiting annually. Dresden's Christmas market, the Striezelmarkt, is one of Germany's oldest, dating to 1434. The city successfully balances preserving its reconstructed historical heritage with modern development and technological innovation.
