About Dortmund

Dortmund is a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, located in the Ruhr area with approximately 603,000 inhabitants, making it the eighth-largest city in Germany. Once a medieval trading hub and member of the Hanseatic League, Dortmund later became one of Germany's most important centers for coal mining, steel production, and beer brewing. The city has successfully transformed from heavy industry to technology and services.

The Reinoldikirche (St. Reinold's Church), built in the 13th century, honors the city's patron saint and features a distinctive tower that dominates the cityscape. The Dortmunder U, a former brewery building with a massive "U" sign on top, now serves as a center for art and creativity, housing museums and cultural institutions. The Westfalenpark offers 70 hectares of gardens, including the Florianturm TV tower with observation deck and rotating restaurant.

The German Football Museum (Deutsches Fußballmuseum) celebrates Germany's football heritage and achievements. The Signal Iduna Park stadium, home to Borussia Dortmund football club, is Germany's largest football stadium with a capacity of over 81,000, famous for its "Yellow Wall" standing section. The Zeche Zollern, a former coal mine with Art Nouveau architecture, operates as a mining museum.

Dortmund Technical University emphasizes engineering and natural sciences. The city's economy has shifted toward logistics, with one of Europe's largest freight airports, insurance and financial services, and information technology. Microelectronics and microsystems technology research centers contribute to innovation. The Christmas market in Dortmund features one of the world's largest Christmas trees at over 45 meters. The city maintains extensive green spaces, with parks and forests covering significant portions of the urban area.
