About Dachau

Dachau is a town in Bavaria, Germany, located approximately 20 kilometers northwest of Munich with around 47,000 inhabitants. While the town has medieval origins and was once known for its artists' colony, it became internationally known primarily for the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site. The name Dachau has become synonymous worldwide with the Nazi concentration camp system.

The Dachau Concentration Camp was established in March 1933 as one of the first Nazi concentration camps and served as a model for other camps. It operated for twelve years until American forces liberated it in April 1945. Over 200,000 prisoners from across Europe were imprisoned here, and tens of thousands died from disease, malnutrition, forced labor, and executions. The memorial site, opened in 1965, preserves two reconstructed barracks, the crematorium, and various exhibition buildings documenting the camp's history.

Beyond its tragic 20th-century history, Dachau possesses a significant cultural heritage. The Dachau Palace (Schloss Dachau), a Renaissance structure dating from the 16th century, offers panoramic views of Munich and the Alps on clear days. The palace features a baroque banquet hall and surrounding gardens. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Dachau attracted numerous artists who founded an artists' colony, and the Dachau Art Gallery (Gemäldegalerie Dachau) displays works from this period.

The town's economy benefits from its proximity to Munich, with many residents commuting to the larger city. Local industries include precision instruments and technology companies. Despite the shadow of its concentration camp history, Dachau maintains active community life with cultural events and recreational facilities. The memorial site attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors annually, serving as an important site for education about Holocaust history.
