About Celle
Celle is a town in Lower Saxony, Germany, located on the Aller River with approximately 67,000 inhabitants. The town is renowned for having the largest ensemble of intact half-timbered houses in Europe, with over 400 beautifully preserved buildings dating from the 16th to 18th centuries. Celle served as the residence of the Dukes of Brunswick-Lüneburg from 1378 to 1705.
The Celle Castle (Celler Schloss), originally built in 1292 and expanded in Renaissance style, features Germany's oldest surviving baroque theater from 1674. The castle served as a ducal residence and now houses a museum and the baroque chapel. The Old Town showcases exceptional half-timbered architecture, with houses featuring ornate carvings and colorful facades. The Town Church (Stadtkirche St. Marien) contains a ducal crypt and impressive Renaissance pulpit.
The Bomann Museum displays regional cultural history and folk art from Lower Saxony. Celle's economy traditionally relied on textile manufacturing but now emphasizes services, retail, and tourism. The town hosts a significant prison facility and several administrative offices. The French Garden (Französischer Garten) provides baroque landscape design with walking paths. Celle's well-preserved historic center, combined with its cultural heritage, makes it a popular tourist destination and filming location for historical productions.
