About Braunschweig

Braunschweig, also known as Brunswick, is a city in Lower Saxony, Germany, with approximately 253,000 inhabitants. Located on the Oker River, it served as the residence of Henry the Lion in the 12th century and was a powerful member of the Hanseatic League during the Middle Ages. The city played a significant role in German history as the capital of the Duchy of Brunswick.

The Brunswick Lion (Braunschweiger Löwe), a bronze sculpture created in 1166, stands as the city's symbol and is considered the oldest surviving monumental sculpture north of the Alps. The Brunswick Cathedral (Braunschweiger Dom) houses the tomb of Henry the Lion and his wife. The Dankwarderode Castle, rebuilt in the 19th century, contains a museum with medieval art. The Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum, founded in 1754, is one of the oldest museums in Europe.

Braunschweig Technical University, established in 1745, specializes in engineering and natural sciences. The city has strong automotive industry connections, with Volkswagen maintaining research facilities nearby. Braunschweig was heavily damaged during World War II but has reconstructed many historic buildings.
