About Augsburg
Augsburg is a city in Bavaria, Germany, located at the confluence of the Lech and Wertach rivers. Founded by the Romans in 15 BC, it is one of Germany's oldest cities and was named after Emperor Augustus. With a population of around 301,000, Augsburg was a major center of trade and banking during the Renaissance period.
The Fuggerei, established in 1521, is the world's oldest social housing complex still in use. Founded by banker Jakob Fugger, it provides affordable housing for needy citizens at an annual rent that has remained unchanged for centuries. The Augsburg Town Hall, built between 1615 and 1620, features the magnificent Golden Hall with its gilded interior. The Augsburger Dom (Augsburg Cathedral) dates back to the 11th century and contains notable medieval artworks.
The city played a crucial role in religious history as the site where the Augsburg Confession was presented in 1530. Today, Augsburg maintains a diverse economy with textile manufacturing, mechanical engineering, and printing industries.
