About Rovaniemi
Rovaniemi is the capital and commercial center of Finland's northernmost province, Lapland. Located at the confluence of the Kemijoki and Ounasjoki rivers, the city sits directly on the Arctic Circle, making it a significant geographical landmark. With a population of approximately 65,900 people (as of 2025), Rovaniemi serves as the administrative, educational, and cultural hub of Finnish Lapland. The city covers an area of about 8,017 square kilometers (3,095 square miles), making it geographically one of the largest municipalities in Europe, though much of this area is sparsely populated forest.

The history of Rovaniemi stretches back thousands of years, with archaeological findings suggesting human presence in the area since the Stone Age. However, the modern city was largely rebuilt after World War II, following extensive destruction during the Lapland War in 1944 when retreating German forces destroyed approximately 90% of the city's buildings. The renowned Finnish architect Alvar Aalto designed the post-war reconstruction plan for Rovaniemi in the shape of a reindeer's head, with the major roads forming the antlers and city streets creating the head outline when viewed from above.

Rovaniemi is internationally recognized as the "Official Hometown of Santa Claus," making Santa Claus Village and SantaPark major tourist attractions that draw visitors from around the world. Located 8 kilometers north of the city center, Santa Claus Village sits directly on the Arctic Circle line, which is visibly marked for visitors to cross. The village includes Santa's Main Post Office, which receives hundreds of thousands of letters annually from children worldwide, and offers visitors the opportunity to meet Santa Claus year-round. Tourism in Rovaniemi peaks during winter months when travelers come to experience Arctic phenomena like the Northern Lights and participate in activities such as reindeer sleigh rides, snowmobiling, and ice fishing.
The city is home to several significant cultural institutions, including Arktikum, a museum and science center focusing on Arctic research and the history of Finnish Lapland. The Korundi House of Culture houses the Rovaniemi Art Museum and serves as the home of the Lapland Chamber Orchestra. Pilke Science Centre educates visitors about northern forests and their sustainable use.
Rovaniemi hosts the University of Lapland, the northernmost university in the European Union, and the Lapland University of Applied Sciences, making it an important educational center. The city's economy relies heavily on tourism, services, and forestry industries. Despite its northern location (66°N), Rovaniemi experiences relatively mild winters for the Arctic, with average January temperatures around -11°C (12°F), while summer temperatures can reach 20°C (68°F) or higher. The city experiences the polar night in winter when the sun doesn't rise above the horizon for several weeks, and the midnight sun in summer when daylight persists for 24 hours.
