About Abidjan
Abidjan, the economic capital and largest city of Côte d'Ivoire, serves as the country's major urban center with a population exceeding 4.7 million people. Located on the southern Atlantic coast, the city is characterized by its modern architecture, particularly in the Plateau district, which is often referred to as the "Manhattan of Africa." Abidjan's economy is centered around its port, which handles approximately 90% of the country's foreign trade and is one of the largest ports in West Africa.
The city was established as a colonial trading post in 1893 and experienced significant growth after the completion of the Vridi Canal in 1950, which connected the Ébrié Lagoon to the Atlantic Ocean. The city's infrastructure includes the Felix Houphouët-Boigny International Airport, making it a major transportation hub for West Africa.
Abidjan is divided into ten municipalities and features notable landmarks such as the St. Paul's Cathedral, designed by Italian architect Aldo Spirito, and the distinctive pyramid-shaped La Pyramide building. The city also hosts several important cultural institutions, including the National Library and the National Museum.
