About Sihanoukville
Sihanoukville (also known as Kampong Som) is a coastal city and port in southwestern Cambodia, located on the Gulf of Thailand. Named after former King Norodom Sihanouk, the city serves as the capital of Preah Sihanouk Province. Originally founded in 1955 as the site of Cambodia's only deep-water port, the city has since evolved into one of the country's major economic hubs and tourist destinations.
With a population of approximately 89,800 people (as of 2019), Sihanoukville has experienced rapid development and urbanization, particularly due to significant Chinese investment in recent years. The city's economy is primarily driven by its port operations, tourism, and the growing casino industry. The Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, Cambodia's only deep-water seaport, handles about 70% of the country's maritime trade.
The city boasts several popular beaches along its coastline. Ochheuteal Beach is the most developed and frequented tourist beach, stretching about 3.5 kilometers along the shore. Serendipity Beach, located at the northern end of Ochheuteal, is popular among backpackers and budget travelers. Other notable beaches include Independence Beach, Victory Beach, and Sokha Beach. The more secluded Otres Beach is known for its pristine waters and relaxed atmosphere.

Notable landmarks and attractions in Sihanoukville include the Wat Leu Temple, situated on a hilltop offering panoramic views of the city and coastline. The Golden Lions Monument, located in the city center, has become an iconic symbol of Sihanoukville. Kbal Chhay Waterfall, located approximately 16 kilometers from the city center, is a popular natural attraction featuring a series of waterfalls and streams.
The city experiences a tropical climate with two distinct seasons: the monsoon season (May to October) and the dry season (November to April). Average temperatures range from 24°C to 32°C (75°F to 90°F) throughout the year. The local economy has diversified beyond tourism and port activities to include manufacturing, with several special economic zones established in recent years. Infrastructure development continues with the expansion of the Sihanoukville International Airport and ongoing improvements to road connections with Phnom Penh and other major cities in Cambodia.
