About Siem Reap

Siem Reap is a major tourist destination and resort town in northwestern Cambodia, serving as the gateway to the Angkor Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The city is located in Siem Reap Province and functions as its provincial capital. With a population of approximately 250,000 people (2019), it has experienced significant growth due to the tourism industry centered around the ancient Angkor temples.

The name "Siem Reap" literally means "Defeat of Siam" in Khmer, referring to a 16th-century victory over an invading Thai army. The city's modern development began during the French colonial period in the early 20th century when the first hotels were built to accommodate visitors to the Angkor temples. During the Khmer Rouge regime (1975-1979), Siem Reap, like many other Cambodian cities, suffered significant damage and population displacement. However, since the 1990s, the city has undergone rapid development and urbanization, transforming into a modern tourist hub while maintaining its historical charm.

The city's primary attraction is the vast complex of Angkor Archaeological Park, which contains the magnificent remains of several capitals of the Khmer Empire from the 9th to the 15th centuries. Among these, Angkor Thom stands out as the last great capital of the Khmer Empire, established in the late 12th century by King Jayavarman VII. This ancient city, spanning approximately 9 square kilometers, is surrounded by an impressive moat and wall with five monumental gates. Within its boundaries lie numerous significant structures, including the magnificent state temple of the Bayon. The most famous temples include Angkor Wat, the world's largest religious monument, Bayon Temple with its iconic face towers, and Ta Prohm, known for its dramatic intertwining of temple structures with massive tree roots. These archaeological sites attract over two million international visitors annually.

Beyond the ancient temples, Siem Reap offers various cultural attractions and modern amenities. The city center features the Old Market (Psar Chas), Pub Street, and numerous traditional markets selling local crafts, textiles, and souvenirs. The Angkor National Museum houses thousands of artifacts from the Angkor period, while the Cambodia Cultural Village showcases traditional Khmer houses and performances. The city is also home to several notable Buddhist temples, including Wat Thmei and Wat Preah Prom Rath.

The local economy is predominantly driven by tourism, with hundreds of hotels, guesthouses, restaurants, and tour companies operating throughout the city. Siem Reap International Airport serves as a major entry point for visitors, offering connections to various Asian destinations. The city's infrastructure has been significantly modernized, though it still retains many French colonial and Chinese-style buildings in its Old French Quarter and around the Old Market area. Agriculture, particularly rice cultivation, remains an important secondary economic activity in the surrounding rural areas.
