About Phnom Penh
Phnom Penh is the capital and most populous city of Cambodia, serving as the nation's economic, cultural, and political center. Located at the confluence of three rivers - the Mekong, Tonlé Sap, and Bassac - the city has been Cambodia's capital since the French colonization in 1865, except for the period during the Khmer Rouge regime from 1975 to 1979.
With a population of over 2.5 million people (2023), Phnom Penh has experienced rapid urbanization and development in recent decades. The city's name derives from the Wat Phnom ("Hill Temple"), the central religious monument built in 1373 on a man-made hill. Legend states that Lady Penh found sacred Buddhist relics in the nearby river and established the temple to house them, leading to the city's name which literally means "Penh's Hill."

The city features numerous historical and cultural landmarks that reflect its complex history. The Royal Palace, constructed in 1866, serves as the residence of the King of Cambodia and showcases classic Khmer architecture. Adjacent to it, the Silver Pagoda, named for its floor covered with over 5,000 silver tiles, houses national treasures including the Emerald Buddha statue. The National Museum of Cambodia, established in 1920, contains the world's finest collection of Khmer sculpture and cultural artifacts.

Phnom Penh also preserves sites commemorating the tragic period of the Khmer Rouge regime. The Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, formerly Security Prison 21 (S-21), and the Choeung Ek Killing Fields serve as powerful reminders of the genocide that occurred between 1975 and 1979. These sites now function as important historical monuments and educational centers.
The city's infrastructure has modernized significantly since the 1990s. The Central Market (Phsar Thmei), built in 1937 in Art Deco style, remains a prominent landmark and bustling commercial center. Modern developments include high-rise buildings, shopping centers, and improved transportation networks. The city serves as Cambodia's primary business hub, hosting numerous government institutions, international organizations, and educational facilities. Despite rapid modernization, traditional markets, Buddhist temples, and French colonial architecture continue to characterize much of the urban landscape, creating a unique blend of historical and contemporary elements.
