About Tasmania
Tasmania is an island state of Australia, located about 240 kilometers (150 miles) south of the mainland and separated from it by the Bass Strait. The state comprises the main island of Tasmania and several smaller nearby islands. Tasmania's geography is characterized by a diverse landscape, including rugged mountains, dense forests and extensive coastlines, creating a reputation for the state's natural beauty.
Hobart, the state's capital and largest city, serves as the economic and cultural center of Tasmania. Located on the southeast coast, Hobart is home to significant cultural and historical sites such as Salamanca Market and the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA). Launceston, another major city located in the north of the country, offers a combination of natural attractions and architectural monuments, among which the Cataract Gorge stands out.
Tourism plays a vital role in Tasmania's economy and the many attractions attract visitors interested in nature and history. The Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, covering almost 20% of the state, offers opportunities for hiking and wildlife watching.
