About Mariehamn
Mariehamn is the capital city of Åland, an autonomous territory of Finland located in the Baltic Sea between Finland and Sweden. Founded in 1861, the city was named after Maria Alexandrovna, the Empress consort of Russian Emperor Alexander II. Mariehamn serves as the administrative, economic, and cultural center of the Åland Islands, with a population of approximately 11,800 residents, representing about 40% of Åland's total population.

The city occupies a peninsula between two harbors: the Western Harbor (Västerhamn) and the Eastern Harbor (Österhamn). Covering an area of 11.8 square kilometers (4.56 square miles), Mariehamn features a grid plan layout designed by architect Georg Theodor Chiewitz. Swedish is the official language of Åland, including Mariehamn, making it distinct from mainland Finland where Finnish predominates. The city enjoys a maritime climate moderated by the surrounding Baltic Sea, with milder winters and cooler summers compared to the Finnish mainland.
Mariehamn's economy is heavily based on shipping, tourism, and services. The city serves as headquarters for Viking Line and previously for Eckerö Line, two major Baltic ferry operators. The Port of Mariehamn handles approximately 1.5 million passengers annually, with regular ferry connections to mainland Finland, Sweden, and Estonia.
Among the city's notable attractions is The Maritime Quarter (Sjökvarteret), a living museum area showcasing traditional maritime crafts and boatbuilding. The Åland Maritime Museum documents the islands' rich seafaring history and houses exhibits on the local shipping industry. Adjacent to the museum is the Pommern, a preserved four-masted steel barque built in 1903, which is one of the last remaining windjammers in the world. The ship is now permanently moored in the Western Harbor and serves as a museum ship.
Visitors can also explore Lilla Holmen, a small island connected to the mainland by a bridge, featuring a small beach, children's playground, and a mini zoo. The Åland Museum offers insights into the islands' history and cultural heritage.
Mariehamn's architecture reflects its historical development, with several buildings designed in a distinctive wooden Art Nouveau style. The Government Building (Självstyrelsegården) houses the Åland Parliament and Government. The city's main street, Torggatan, features numerous shops, restaurants, and cafés.
Mariehamn Airport, located about 3 kilometers northwest of the city center, provides regular connections to Helsinki, Stockholm, and seasonal destinations. The city hosts several annual events, including the Rockoff Festival in July and the Åland Sea Days maritime festival. Despite being part of Finland, Mariehamn and the Åland Islands maintain their own distinct culture, with strong Swedish influences evident in local customs, cuisine, and architecture.
